Keeping Cool: The Cotton Kaftan

Shopping or packing for a long haul destination such as Barbados, India or Singapore for a dose of winter sun? This can be tricky, when respecting other, more conservative cultures, whilst still remaining cool and fashionable in the heat.

Fabric really is key when it comes to staying cool in high temperatures or stifling humidity. The loosest pieces will quickly cling to you if they are made of a synthetic material, despite how lightweight they might appear. For this reason, in the majority, natural fibres such as cotton, linen and rayon are best for tropical climates as they absorb moisture and allow a natural flow of air circulation around the body.

Maxi dresses are a popular stylish option for every size and shape in the heat, but this style is more often than not strapless, which may not be appropriate for the more conservative winter sun resort or town.

Surprisingly, covering up, rather than baring all, can help you to remain cooler in the heat of the sun, as well as protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. For this reason a cotton kaftan is one of the most classic and timeless ways to stay effortlessly chic and cool for your winter vacation.

With origins in the heat of historic Persia, an elegant designer kaftan can be worn for breakfast, on the beach, by the bar, poolside or for al fresco dining. Whether you choose a long kaftan worn over beachwear or a flirty kaftan top teamed with skinny jeans in the evening, this refined option will ensure that you remain both comfortable and sophisticated.

Perfect for the jet set traveller, a kaftan is essential for packing, as it can be rolled up in a suitcase then slipped straight on, without the hassle of ironing or styling. Wear it minimally on its own, this style is delightfully versatile, so style it up with layered jewellery and scarves if the mood takes you.

The MyaBlueBeach designer kaftan collections feature effortlessly elegant kaftans, from playful kaftan tops through to floaty maxi kaftans. Have a browse to find your perfect capsule winter holiday wardrobe.

Designer Kaftans through the years, a lesson in kaftan style

A Lesson in Style - The Evolution of the Kaftan

Worn for thousands of years, by men and women, the kaftan is a simple garment, often cut from a single piece of cloth. Originating from the middle east, the kaftan was typically hip or ankle length, whilst contemporary designs have introduced a knee-length version, that is popular as a versatile beach cover up.

The comfortable, loose styling of a kaftan offers a unique combination of both modesty and allure. They are glamorous and relaxed, exotic yet minimal and look fabulous no matter what age or body shape you are.

In the 1950’s the kaftan’s popularity as a fashion piece began with Christian Dior’s introduction of an open version. Yves Saint Laurent, who was notably born in Algeria, also began producing kaftan styles in the 1960’s. This was the beginning of the ‘hostess gown’ a kaftan style worn for entertaining at home.

The beach kaftan was fast becoming a fashion staple, and was set to remain so as the iconic Elizabeth Taylor and other stars of the silver screen as well as fashion models, famously wore them, both on and off screen, making the kaftan synonymous with glamour and exclusivity.
